WILD
LIFE (back

On this page, you will find graphics of 13 wildlife
species hidden in a nature scene.
Scroll
over the scene to animate and reveal each species
hidden in the scene, and play a recording of the
creature’s sound (if applicable). As you scroll
over the hidden animals, their names will appear
at the top of the page.
Click
on the animals in the scene to bring you into that
species’ file which contains facts and information
(in text, photographs, graphics, audio, and video)
about each species. Users have the choice to listen
to the text read aloud while they follow along,
or to turn off the audio and read it themselves.
The species currently

Wildlife Files
Within each species file there are six icons leading
to six areas of information to explore:

- Up Close & Purrsonal
(features, vital statistics, signs, tracks)
- Oh! Home on the Range (habitat
and range map)
- Eat, Drink & Be Wary
(diet and predators)
- Family Tree (taxonomy and
related species)
- The Birds & the Bees
(courtship, young, parenting, gestation)
- Take the Challenge (quiz,
crossword puzzle, word search, colouring page
and science activity for that animal)
Each of these topics also contains five selections for information about the animal.
Clicking on the
first five topic icons will bring you into five
areas of specific information about the species
including: photos, gross facts, jokes, cool facts,
video clips and conservation. The last icon links
to a quiz and four more activities about the species.
In each area of the wildlife files, users have a
choice to read the text themselves or to have it
read to them. The audio defaults to on when
you open these files. Clicking
on this icon will turn the audio off. Click
on it again to turn the audio back on.
WILD
STUFF (back

- Click
on the bottom drawer of the Clubhouse filing cabinet
to link to Wild Stuff like games, puzzles and other
fun activities for kids.
- Wild Stuff
Like the previous pages, Wild Stuff has an oval
camping scene which contains activities, puzzles
and games that provide children practice in using
technology to operate the keyboard and mouse as
well increase their knowledge about animals. Kids
love these activities, which also meet the requirements
of the elementary science curriculum, ICT outcomes,
and other subject areas.
Scroll
over the scene to animate the icons, then click
on an icon to view that activity.
Wild Stuff includes 13 activities:
- 13 Colouring
pages (Print a PDF colouring page of each of
the 13 species. Each page contains a fact about
the animal.)
- 13 Word Searches
(Print a PDF word search for each animal. Use
vocabulary from the animal files to solve the
puzzles. Each page contains a fact about the
animal and an option to print out solutions.)
- 13 Crossword Puzzles
(Print a PDF crossword for each animal. Use
the information from the online content to solve
the puzzles. Each page contains a fact about
the animal and an option to print out solutions.)
- Animal Tracks
(match tracks with the animal that makes them)
- Memory Game
(three levels of difficulty)
- Animal Tic Tac Toe
(three levels of difficulty)
- Match the Poop with
the Pooper (match
animal droppings to the correct animal)

BACKYARD

- This area contains science
learning activities related to the 13 species, which
users can do at school or at home in their own backyards.
There are six areas to explore from this page. Scroll
over the icons then click
to view each area.
What Do You Think?
Children can respond to poll questions and read the
results of past polls.
Ask an Expert
  
Encourages inquiry and engagement. Kids send in questions
to be answered by our host and other wildlife experts
or read answers to past questions sent in by kids.
Wild Jobs
Increases awareness of and interest in careers involving
wildlife and scientific research. Provides an appreciation
for the role of science and scientists
in our daily lives.
Hands on Science
30 science experiments kids can do at home or at school.
Each activity relates to a featured species and demonstrates
a science concept. Activities
include a list of materials, instructions and questions to reflect on during
the learning activity as well as an explanation of the science behind the
activity. These activities can also be downloaded from the teacher’s
page.
Wildlife Agent
In this section, kids can take a pledge or download forms
to record their own wildlife sightings, investigations
and observations.
Wild Plants
Click
on the flowers in the window box to open Wild Plants.
Here, kids can learn to identify Canadian wildflowers
and native plants. Each plant is listed alphabetically,
with a photograph, and its common and Latin names.
Click
on the sunglasses in the Clubhouse to link to the
interesting facts about animals and nature compiled
here. Some facts will come from research the e-Zine
contributors have done.
From the Clubhouse, click
on the green book on the bookshelf to open the glossary.
Throughout the animal files, difficult or unfamiliar
words are highlighted and a definition appears when
the user scrolls over the word. The glossary lists
these words alphabetically with arrows to move through
the lists.
WILDFILES
E-ZINE (back
to top)
Click
on the magazines in the Clubhouse to open the e-Zine
page and read current and past issues of the science
and nature magazine written entirely by kids. The
e-Zine, Wildfiles.tv News, provides students
with a means of interacting with the information on
the television series and the online content. Many
learning objectives in language arts, social studies,
science, mathematics and fine arts can be addressed
by encouraging students to submit materials via this
magazine. The magazine and its content is driven by
an Advisory Group of children aged 9-13 who meet monthly
to decide on themes for the e-Zine, write articles,
book reviews, etc.
- The magazine promotes interest
in Wildfiles.tv online content and the
television series as it highlights many of the
features of both. It is an interactive link that
allows kids to create and submit content to be
published in the e-Zine.
- Students who submit content
to the e-Zine will potentially gain knowledge
and experience in writing, reporting, illustration,
interviewing, summary, analysis, and evaluation.
Those students who decide to create their own
classroom or school magazine will gain valuable
skills in cooperative learning, planning, and
goal setting.
KIDS
GALLERY (back

Click
on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse to enter
the Kids Gallery. The Kids Gallery is a collection
of poetry and artwork submitted to Wildfiles.tv
by elementary aged kids. The poems and artwork
feature science and nature themes and provide
an opportunity to link to the elementary art and
language arts programs. Kids can browse the gallery
and/or submit their own work for display.
WILD
YOGA (back
to top)
 
Click
on the yoga mat in the Clubhouse to get to Wild
Yoga for Kids. Kids get moving in this area, with
instructions and pictures of a series of animal
yoga poses, such as the Butterfly, and the Camel.
An initiated Yoga Siromani (Teacher of Yoga) wrote
the instructions. Yoga can be used at home or
in the classroom to help kids focus, relax and
improve balance, coordination, and concentration.
A video, Wild Yoga for Kids, is also available
for use at home and in schools and can be ordered
from Reel
Girls Media.
